So after debating on what to get my wife Megan for Christmas this year, I decided to give her something she's been needing for a while now. A new digital SLR (single-lens reflex) camera. See, she's been hanging on to her old Sony point-and-shoot for years now, in fact I think it may be one of the first digital cameras that ever came out. It's big, bulky and the picture quality just isn't up to par with the cameras available these days. Then add the fact that she's always loved photography (and pretty damn good at it), I knew this would be the perfect gift for her.
Nikon vs. Canon
The hardest part was picking which camera to get. Although I admit to not much about cameras, I knew the decision was going to come down to Nikon or Canon. Don't get me wrong, I like many Sony products, but they seem to have their hands into just about everything (TVs, stereos, mp3 players, gaming systems, etc.). I like the fact that Canon and Nikon concentrate on producing cameras and, for the most part, that's it.
After narrowing down the DSLRs that fit within my budget, it came down to the Nikon D90 and the Canon EOS 50D. Both looked very similar, but the fact that the D90 could record 720p HD video sealed the deal. I even asked my buddy, a semi-professional photographer, which camera to go with and even he, a Canon-user, said the D90 was my best bet. And a review from Wired and Time's Top Ten of 2008 assured me that I had made the right decision.
